About the “Starry Sky Viewing Area” Initiative on Rebun Island

The night sky over Rebun Island is a breathtaking spectacle, where the twinkling of the stars is so vivid it can be clearly felt with the naked eye.
The island retains its untouched nature with few streetlights, and there is almost no artificial light along the coastline.
With the goal of eventually having this beautiful night sky certified as an “International Dark Sky Park*,”
efforts are underway to first establish “Starry Sky Viewing Areas” where tourists and locals alike can easily gaze at the stars.
This project is being led by nature photographer Yosuke Kashiwakura in collaboration with local residents.

The planned sites are near the settlement of Cape Sukoton at the northernmost tip of Rebun Island, and near the Momoiwa Observatory.
The project aims to create spaces where visitors can sit on handmade benches and quietly enjoy the star-filled sky, with informative signage installed.
Our hotel resonates with Mr. Kashiwakura’s vision and a future where the starry skies of Rebun Island become a travel destination, and we are proud to support this initiative.

*International Dark Sky Park: A certification system that recognizes excellent efforts to protect and preserve dark, natural night skies free from light pollution.
